Recently, a high-ranking political appointee at the Federal Department of Health and Human Services broadcast a speech on social media where among other lurid falsehoods, he made unsubstantiated accusations of “sedition” against scientists and medical practitioners at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention related to their work to inform the public of risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and provide advice on an effective response. While my office is in local government, the baseless accusations are so serious that I am moved to declare the obvious: The capable and committed staff of CDC are among the most important and valued public servants in the world today. They constitute an heroic asset to the nation. As your County Commissioner, I know many of these fine people depend upon them to help protect my health, that of my family, my countrymen, and people all over the world.
It is a deplorable shame that such slanderous behavior is not met with summary consequences by the accuser’s superiors and our federal elected representatives, but that failing must be addressed by other means. Until that time, please know how much we in local government appreciate the expertise and sacrifices of CDC personnel as they work to diminish myriad threats to personal and public health. Our lives are far better for the work they do.
Commissioner, District 2
